Firewalls: Basic first-level protection for your
organization
There are so many types of threats to computer
security that we suggest many levels of protection--one for each source
of potential danger.
Among the most common solutions are:
- Anti-virus
software to protect against worms and other mutating threats that
can destroy data
- Spyware protection to clean up residual, seemingly
benign files on your computer. Spyware leaves your computer open to a
wide variety of attacks.
- Backup, in case your data gets lost, destroyed or
damaged
Many of the threats listed above only get to your computer in the first
place because nobody's "out front" to make sure things don't get in that
don't belong. A firewall is a good first step in that direction.
Firewalls are hardware devices that block suspicious incoming and/or
outgoing traffic to and from your computer or network. Many firewalls
offer content filtering, ensuring that anyone connected to your internet
connection cannot go to websites you specify.
Firewalls can block particular services (AOL Instant Messenger or other chat
tools, for example). Many of the "spyware" attacks send incoming and
outgoing traffic from your computer without your knowledge. A firewall
can alert you to any such activity and give you the opportunity to block
it once and forever. We can even set up your firewall to send you e-mail
if your computer comes under attack.
We can provide a wide variety of firewalls, ranging from the simplest
single user product to an enterprise firewall for the needs of an
organization of 50+ people.
There are also software firewalls such as ZoneAlarm. ZoneAlarm and its ilk of products were once
a very handy, inexpensive way to block against a variety of intrusions.
However, considering their $40 subscription price, and renewal fees
every year for continued updates to guard against the latest threat, we
are more inclined to recommend a one-time investment of as little as
$350 to keep you much better protected, without any renewal fees or
concerns that you might not be up-to-date.
